This 1967 movie starring Paul Newman as a Christ figure in a southern jail is just as the title promises. The story is pure ‘60s tradition struggle angst, the dialogue is rife with iconic lines (What we have here’s a failure to speak”) and speeches about rebelling in opposition to authority, and nobody ever made prison blues look nearly as good as Newman. Greater than half a century after it was first launched, it still does not get a lot cooler that Luke.

Between Beasts of No Nation and First They Killed My Father, Netflix has two winners about a horrible subject: baby soldiers. This one—Netflix’s first big unique movie to garner some awards consideration—would be the most harrowing. It stars Idris Elba because the commandant who takes young Agu (Abraham Attah) from his family. A tough however essential watch.

This superbly-shot black-and-white movie gives director Alfonso Cuarón a chance to show a slice of his past. Going down in Mexico Metropolis in the early 1970s, Roma focuses on an indigenous lady who serves a white household, as all of them fight to survive calamity after calamity. From betrayals to natural disasters, Roma throws the kitchen sink at this household, after which tacks on the Corpus Christi Bloodbath of 1971. Emotionally harrowing, this Academy Award-nominated movie calls for you watch with kleenex or some other coping mechanism.

Directed by Amy Poehler, who stars in it alongside Emily Spivey and “SNL” alums Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer and Paula Pell, this film follows a gaggle of longtime mates who reunite for one of the woman’s fiftieth birthday at Napa Valley. But with an abundance of wine and a thrown out itinerary, something could go unsuitable – or possibly proper.

Written by Paul Schrader and directed by Martin Scorsese, this iconic psychological thriller is extensively thought of to be probably the greatest films ever made. Robert De Niro plays a lonely, haunted Vietnam veteran who descends into violent madness. Co-starring Jodie Foster, Harvey Keitel and Cybill Shepherd, Taxi Driver has accrued countless accolades over the many years, among them: it is a part of the National Film Registry, Sight & Sound named it the thirty first biggest movie ever, and it was nominated for four Oscars, together with Best Picture.
